What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a ‘whole body’ form of manual medicine that aims to treat and provide long term pain relief from acute and chronic injuries.

Osteopaths focus on the link between the structure and function of the body, recognising that if one part is injured then the whole body will be affected.  By considering the musculoskeletal, nervous and circulatory systems as well as internal organs, an osteopath will evaluate the most appropriate treatment approach.  Techniques used may include stretching, massage, myofascial work, manipulation, gentle indirect ‘slow release’ and craniosacral therapy.

University trained for a minimum of five years, osteopaths are primary care practitioners who use skilled evaluation and diagnosis to determine if further medical referral is required.  Treatment is aimed at restoring the body’s natural ability to heal itself in conjunction with discussion on exercise, lifestyle and nutrition.

What and who do Osteopaths treat?Ingridsmall

Osteopaths treat people of all ages for back and neck pain, headaches, musculoskeletal and sporting injuries, occupational strains and injuries, aches and pains during and post pregnancy as well as treatment for staying active and independent with age and the changes experienced in babies, children and teenagers.  Other conditions such as asthma, arthritis, constipation, incontinence, migraines, colic, sleep and feeding difficulties, recurrent ear and throat infections, period pain, digestive problems and jaw pain may respond well to osteopathic treatment.

Osteopathy is covered by most private health funds and the Medicare Enhanced Primary Care scheme.  Osteopaths are registered for workers’ compensation, motor accident insurers and the Department of Veteran Affairs.
