What is homeopathy?Sunny-2small

Homeopathy is an effective system of healing which triggers the body’s own natural tendency to be able to heal itself. Homeopathy is a strong but gentle form of medicine which can be used on its own or alongside other treatments, conventional or holistic.

Homeopathy recognises that symptoms of ill health are expressions of disharmony within the whole person, so we treat you as an individual person and not only your symptoms. In practical terms this means we are looking beyond the physical picture to a deeper cause or susceptibility.

Homeopathic medicines can enhance your general health and mental well being, while at the same time reducing your susceptibility to future ill health. Even small imbalances can be corrected before they develop into serious symptoms.

Still not sure? The National Centre for homeopathy has produced this video “What is homeopathy?”

How does homeopathy work?

Homeopathy is based on the Law of Similars, which means, if a substance can produce symptoms in a healthy person, that substance has the capacity to cure those exact symptoms in a sick person. Or more simply, the idea that what can cause harm to the body, can also cure. It's an idea that has been used in medicine for 2500 years.

So these are rather dry definitions: let’s use a couple of everyday examples:

  • We all know cutting raw onions can make our eyes water and sting and our nose run. When prepared as a Homeopathic remedy it can be used to treat hay fever.
  • Too much coffee has been the cause of many sleepless nights.
  • In minute doses, it can treat insomnia.
  • Eating the herb Arnica Montana can cause internal bleeding.
  • In minute doses it is used with great success to relieve pain (even post surgical pain), treat bruising and inflammation.

Homeopathy is works differently to conventional medicine; it works deeply, stimulating the body’s own self healing processes. This mean that relief is not just symptomatic suppression, such as you’d get from an anti-histamine, but deeper and sustained recovery from the injury, infection or illness. Furthermore, subsequent incidents may be reduced in intensity or duration, or may never return!

Given the holistic nature of Homeopathy, emotional and stress related disorders can also be treated successfully where many other methods may have failed.

What about scientific evidence that homeopathy works?

There are literally hundreds of high quality, published basic science, pre-clinical and clinical studies showing that homeopathy works. These studies have been published in respected journals like Lancet, Pediatrics, Rheumatology, and Annals of Internal Medicine, among others.

See this website link below for an abridged bibliography of these papers

What is a homeopathic consultation like?

It has been said that homeopath’s perceive a patient’s health story much like a landscape painting. The disease being treated is the main feature, but it is the background which gives that feature its true significance.

The initial consultation takes 60-90 minutes, so the overall picture of your health can be understood. As well as the precise details of your complaint, other questions asked may relate to your family history, your reactions to food, weather and temperature, and your emotional and mental state, especially if problems are stress related. Follow up consultations are generally shorter.

What are homeopathic remedies?

Homeopathic remedies are made from plants, minerals, salts and some animal products. Each one has a known pattern of action on a physical and mental level. To select your remedy, the homoeopath seeks a close match, between the known pattern of a remedy and your individual symptom pattern,

Remedies are dispensed as rather neutral tasting liquid drops, or sometimes as mildly sweet pillules, which are placed under the tongue until they have dissolved.

How is Homeopathy different from Naturopathy?

Naturopathy is an umbrella term (coined by a homeopath in the 19th Century!) describing practitioners who are like the GP’s of natural therapies. Their forte is in western herbal medicine, massage therapy, nutrition and vitamin and supplement therapy.

Homoeopathy is a unique and complete system of medicine based on specific principles with its own philosophy and over 4,000 tried and proven medicines.

Can I take my Homeopathic medicines with my regular medicine from the Doctor?

Yes, they can be taken with your regular medication without any adverse side effects or drug interactions.

Homoeopathy is often used as a safe and effective replacement for conventional drugs, and is also used alongside them to help manage unpleasant side-effects.

Common uses of Homeopathic medicines are:

  • promotion of quick and full recovery after surgery, trauma and illness
  • support whilst coming off prescription drugs or to help cope with the side effects of drugs such as chemotherapy etc
  • to strengthen the immune system, raise energy levels, and promote wellbeing.
